Committees

Full Council

Full Council meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month except in August (summer recess). This meeting receives reports from our District and County Council representatives and the local Police. It also ratifies decisions made at the three sub-committees.

Works Service & Planning

This committee receives planning applications from Teignbridge District Council and are consultees only, therefore can forward a comment, however, the final decision is made by TDC Planning Committee. This Committee also looks after the provision of bus shelters and grit-bins around the town. It usually meets on the first Wednesday of the month to discuss planning applications only and the third Wednesday of the month to discuss works, services and planning matters, except in August when there is no meeting (unless required) as it is summer recess.

Finance

This committee deals with the financial responsibilities of the Council, budgets and insurance matters. It also administers the granting of small sums to local organisations annually in March. Meetings are held bi-monthly on the second Wednesday of the month, except in August when there is no meeting (summer recess) and in December when there is an extra meeting to end the year.

Decision making

The Full Council (a meeting of all council members) is responsible for all decisions. But in practice, most of the work is given to smaller groups of Councillors in Committees, or Council Officers (paid staff).

Every Council must publish:

  • Details of when key decisions will be taken
  • Papers of meetings – at least 3 clear days before a meeting, excluding the day of issue and meeting, Sundays and Bank Holidays
  • Minutes of meetings – showing the decisions that were made
